I was supposed to go to the hairdresser this ‘break’ but I’ll probably end up going mid-late December to get my roots touched up. I’m so very tired right now, and I have to get up at 7:30a for church, drive back to Richmond, work the game, take singing group pictures, the second to last rehearsal of the semester before the final concert :O, and group meetings for like 4 of my 5 classes.~~Tomorrow~~ Today might kill me.

I’m really sad cause I did an AMAZING style today and I didn’t have time to take pictures. I got mad compliments :D. I’ll try to recreate it soon. It was done on the flat ironed hair below (I braid at night for waves).

The black has kind of faded already, but I got more dye for January (when I will dye it again).

I used a thermal brush to blowdry my hair and it worked really well for achieving straight ends. I could tell after I had blowdried that it wasn’t going to be the same (of course) as when I got it done at the hairdressers, so I’m going to be wearing it wavy and playing with updos until I go to the hairdresser within the week. When I do go, I’m getting my roots touched up, and my blonde in the front mixed with the red. You can kinda see here how much it’s grown out. The red was to my roots.

I will be straightening my hair tomorrow. I’m going to be trying a new blowdrying method to hopefully achieve straight ends, and not have the burnt hair smell for the week+ that it’ll be straight. I like to switch things up and braid-n-curls/twist outs are not my friends right now.

I seem to be posting every 3 days :(. I’m trying to do at least one a day, but life and school are getting in the way. Anyways, I HAVE COMPLETED THE GRADIENT!!!. I used Kiss Express True Black dye to finish it. I dyed the back section of my hair, parted from the top of my ears meeting in the middle.

I have to say I LOVE the results, and especially since it was $3.99 at the beauty supply store. It was A LOT, and I really really stress this, A WHOLE LOT messier than usual dyeing kits I’ve used. The kit was tiny and included a little bottle of the dye powder, a tiny measuring cup, plastic gloves (I usually use my own), an application brush the container for mixing held all these things. The instructions included direction for mixing 1/4th and 1/2 of the powder, but it’s really difficult to measure so I just mixed the whole thing. The instructions said to mix the powder until its consistency is like a paste, but a watery gelatinous glob is as close as you’ll get to paste. I used Vaseline along my hairline, ears, neck, and cheeks (I really did not want any staining). The gloves they provided were good for mixing, but from experience powder-free vinyl exam gloves work best. I’ve used them with perms (when I used to), henna, dyeing, etc. in the past and maybe it’s my aversion to the latex smell, but I like them a lot better. I didn’t want to mess up any of my larger towels so I used a white hand towel (big mistake!), but I should have used a large towel because it really was messy. The little brush applicator added to the mess. The consistency made it plop-n-drop everywhere at times. Whether using fingers or the brush just be careful. I seriously got the mix everywhere; on my cabinets, the door, the wall, my sink, both rugs, the floor, the mirror, the toilet, need I go on?. I would add a picture if I wasn’t ashamed of how much of a terrible mess my bathroom is. The application start to finish time for the section I did was about 10 minutes. The miniature size of the kit/tools made it take so long. I kept it in for 25 minutes after all the hair was saturated with dye. I wanted it to be as dark as possible. To rinse I used the spraying attachment in my sink I didn’t want the dye to run and possibly darken the blonde and red i have further forward. I then co-washed with a little shampoo in the shower, and used Aussie 3-minute deep treatment. This whole process took 2 hours. If I had to rate the dye I would give it 3 out of 5 stars. ***.

Very sad to say, the twists are coming out. I’ve had them in for about 2 weeks, but my scalp and my ends are suffering. I was always apprehensive about doing the twists after color because to avoid build-up, I don’t use a lot of product. After the first 4 days my ends were like straw, so I figured I’d be taking them down soon. The question was when. I also partied a lot right after they were done, so they got sweaty, dirty, dry really quickly. During the summer I wasn’t doing much so they lasted longer. Also my scalp has been suffering. I used astringent on the problem spots, but I know that I just need to wash.

I’m really sad/mad that I didn’t take any pictures right after I finished. Next time I definitely will.

From all the past week’s shenanagins my hair is in a pretty bad state. I’ve only had the twists in for 9 days and I want to wash really badly. I’m going to use astringent on my scalp and redo the messy twists. This will probably take 3 or so hours, but it’ll look good afterwards so I’m game.

I’ve put in 8 hours today and finished the right half of my head.

The twists are a little bit smaller than I wanted to do them, but I’m fine with the size. I’d say I’ve done 170ish so far in about 11 hours. I expect to finish them in 6-7 hours later today.

I’ve recorded 2 1/2 tutorial vids and they should be done soon.

Fun fact: I do search & destroys, term coined by Curly Nikki, (taking shears and going through your ends to find/search and clip/destroy split ends, or single strand knots) quite frequently. I keep shears at my bedside table and try to get out the single strand knots which I get frequently because of my 4a texture in the back of my head. When my hair is straightened (as it is now and will be for a few more days) I do it even more so that is currently happening a lot since I’m doing midterm papers.

I am anxiously awaiting when my hair is long enough for me to be able to see and trim the ends from the back of my head. I’ve got 6-7 months to go (GAHHHHH!) I have become OBSESSED with doing this because I have only just (with the hair coloring) begun to get my end trimmed regularly just because I don’t trust any hairstylists where I am. Doing this at least keeps them in check. I don’t try to trim anything evenly, I just clip the knot/split end of each hair.

I find that the best way to see them is to put the hair section in front of a white computer screen (an empty word document, I’m supposed to be doing 3 papers lol), or a white wall with a lamp nearby.

My ends have frizzed up a lot since it’s been humid and warm lately so I will be donut bunning as shown below until I wash again. I know you’re supposed to wash after about a week but I have 2 performances coming up with the singing group and it’s midterm week so I will have no time to do anything. For this donut I’m using a rolled up leg warmer HAHA! It makes a huge bun, and it’s synthetic fabric so I don’t have to worry as much about moisture loss.

Side note: I am also pranking my roommate that I got a perm. I think she believed me cause it is bone straight! She pranked me (almost got me) that she shaved the sides of her head when it was actually cornrows so we’re even now

Update: the dying is done and I’m under the dryer nervous as $%&# cause I don’t know if I like what she did. I wanted the front lightened from root to tip and she did streaks and not all the front. But I have to see it before I freak out. Gahhhhh

Update #2: I’m really freakin sad cause its not what I wanted. I’m gonna prolly get dye and duz the front myself the way I want it. :’( I was so excited. Bummed as $&&?$;?%:/#+(

Update #3: Less bummed. It’s all done now and I’m starting to like it. I’m going to get it perfected around Thanksgiving and I’m going to dye the back black after I get back to Richmond. Semi-pleased :)

Today is the day! I’m back in Maryland and I’m going to my mom’s hairdresser at noon to get the color done. I’m going to to get the colors in 4 or 5 sections. The lightest is going to be a light reddish brown or darker blonde and the darkest is going to be dark brown or black.

I’m seriously bummed because I have to go in the morning to renew my license so my picture will be of the dirty week old twist out I’m still sporting. For 5 more years! >:/ I’m not that concerned though. I’m going to do a sweet bun or something. I’ll have pictures up of the wonderful aftermath before the night is over :D

After I get the dye, trim and length check done I’ll probably do a round of small twists. These are the smallest I did over the summer. I did these 3 times over the summer and had them in for 4-6 weeks at a time.I swam (a the beach) while I had them in and I would wash while I had my hair twisted. I love this style because it’s long term, easy to keep up, and easy to style with. The only drawback for me was that my edges started thinning with the amount of upkeep. I think I just never gave m hair a break since I did them back to back to back.

More hats. This one has is gold and black to match my earrings. I’m either going to bun or hat again tomorrow. I’m trying to keep it protective since I’ll be (hopefully) dying in the next 2-3 weeks.

The back looks VERY short (chin/shoulder length) and I don’t like that so I’m keeping it unseen and covered. And I cannot stress enough how bad my ends are (at this point I’m embarrassed) so I’m keeping them very far from sight. When I get the color/trim/flat-ironing done I’m probably going to post a length check.

I’ve been worrying a lot about color maintenance recently because I will be dying my hair similar to these soon.

I’m going to have the light brown/blondeish color in the front and gradually go to black in the back. ‘m worried that my texture will clash with the color cause I have much tighter curls on most of my head than the girls in the above pics. I’m excited, but kinda sad because I won’t be able to henna anymore and I will have to be EXTRA careful with my end/edges/hair in general. I’m going to try rhassoul or bentonite clay instead of henna now to see what my hair likes. I loved when my hair was dyed black, the reddish tint of henna when I had it, and my current natural brown.

I went to Kroger to buy nothing and ended up buying all this. My PJ is showing..

I got Hot Six oil which is something I want to try out as a ends sealer, scalp oil, and a DCing treatment. I got the Sauve Black Raspberry + White Tea conditioner because they didn’t have the Shea butter + Almond kind I like (they were out of literally 3/4 of the things I wanted to get; toilet paper, okra, conditioner, juice, popcorn, blah blah blah). I have been trying to use Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner as a DC but it’s not the same as the Pak. I’m hoping I can use the Creme of Nature as a detangler (behentrimonium methosulfate is one the the first few ingredients).

this is the 2nd day results of my twist out. There is a lot of build-up on my ends and I attribute that to sealing with EVCO. I’m going to be washing soon. I’m going to bun since my hair is kind of stretched out and I’ll shampoo again Wednesday or Thursday because my singing group has a concert and other shenanigans on Friday. I usually only shampoo once a week at the most.

Day 5: Thoughts

I’m really not happy with my hair today. Maybe it’s because I’m sick and feeling icky and my period will/should be starting in T-minus 2 days ago. It’s not even that I an feeling an urge to perm, it’s just that I wish my texture was different. I don’t want any other person’s texture (usually) but I want a looser curl like I have on the top of my head. You can see this in yesterday’s post if you compare the front to the back. I finger combed out my twist out cause I really didn’t like it and then I looked in the mirror and was like UGGGGHHH and I’ve had my hair pulled back ever since.

I think it’s most frustrating because I can never and will never have a fro, but then I can never and will never have bouncy curls. Neither texture wants to cooperate. Some people say that your texture changes as you get older, so I hope the top of my head will take over.

I washed out the pre-poo gunk and shampooed with a vegetable soap bar and then J/A/S/O/N Biotin shampoo. The pre-poo was not good for detangling for me, but I saw a difference in how my hair responded to shampoo. It worked kind of like a deep treatment for me. I’m going to try using EVCO instead of regular coconut oil next time.

I cowashed after I got out with a Herbal Essences Hello Hydration (HEHH) & Herbal Essences Totally Twisted (HETT) mix and I’m about to add Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (EVCO) to the mix as a pre-poo for tomorrow. I think I’ll be doing a twist-n-curl tomorrow.

I have been bunning for a consistent week and this is the aftermath of a bunning style I started back when I was transitioning. It was much easier with permed ends, and I recommend it to those who are transitioning or still perming. I’ll do a photo (possibly video mehh..) tutorial soon. I basically pull my hair into 2 ponytails (one if I’m early into transitioning or still permed) and braid and curl the ends. This time I didn’t have enough time to let my ends dry so only the front had curls and the back was/is frizz.

I'm been in-between nothing and 'vacations' so forgive me for my extended absences. I also just got a new laptop (today!) and haven't had access to a working computer for a while. When I have less time to do my hair I will have to do different styles therefore I will not be wearing small twists as much therefore I will post more and have more to post about. My hair is considerably longer, since I ended up basically doing a grow-out challenge through the twists, so I'll be able to try more styles. I'm looking forward to doing bantu knot-outs, twis-n-curls, and I also will be working so I'll be able to let my PJ run wild. I did get A LOT of the products I wanted to try.

So far I like Jane Carter, Shea Moisture CES, and Taliah Waajid. I'll post more in depth reviews as I have more time to feel out the products. I was painfully neglectful to my twists for the last week and they were dry and felt like straw at the ends (I know, I need to deep condition) and I applied the CES in small amounts to all the twists, and sprayed both JC and TW all over my head. My hair today feels MUCH stronger and more moisturized already. My hair tends to be dryer in the summer and I need to put a moisturizer (leave-ins and oils don't work, I need a cream or something usually) to keep my hair healthy. I also plan on trying Brahmi oil or some products that have the oil in them because my edges are suffering as of now. Just around my temples they have thinned out a lot due to shedding and the twists. It's all grown back VERY fast (about in an inch as of now) but I want to try and prevent it and to correct it.

I have yet to use the to soaps, I will soon though. I like to use soaps with the right ingredients on my hair sometimes. I have been using the South of France Organic Shea Butter bar soap to clarify before hennaing. Speaking of hennaing, I need to do that ASAP. I haven't hennaed since... I don't even remember SAAAAADDDD. I also haven't DC'd in about the same amount of time. I'm been neglecting not only my hair, but myself as well. Something about having summers off because of school throws me off. Anyways, I'll have some pics up in the near future of this last bout of twists (done in 3 days for a concert [Warped Tour]) and my in-between style.

This is my process for doing small twists. Of these I had 600ish. I started with the front of my head and then moved from the nape of my neck up. They took 15 hours over 5 days. I started them June 1st and they lasted until July 14th. So about 6 weeks of wear. I was able to swim with them (in the ocean 3 times and in the pool twice) and wash them each time after that. That made it a lot more difficult to take them out though.

Super small twists are my favorite summer style.

Vacation!

I went to the beach and Delaware with my fam for a week. My twists held up very well actually. I am ACHING to take them out, but I have to wait until I get back to Richmond.

They held up really well and just shrunk a couple inches. I swam 3 times and washed it 2 times. There are tangles at my roots, but no matting or locking. I think I'm going to wait a week and then do small twists again. They are working wonders for containing my hair in the summer. The vid (**humongous sigh**) will be up soon .

Technical difficulties

I've been working a basketball camp this week so I haven't had a chance to edit my video, as well as it's too large to be uploaded straight here (which I wanted to do and then put the edited version on youtube and a link here).

I'm still rocking the twists, but I've taken to keeping them pulled up in a bun. They've been in for 3 1/2 - 4 weeks and I said in my previous post I want them to last for another 2-3 weeks.

I did them very similarly to the last time this time around. I banded with twice as many scrunchies, and blow dried in sections on warm and then on cool. This was the result:

I wore pigtail puffs for a day before I started. After starting I would pull it back in a ponytail or a bun.

I find it easiest to do it section by section, I usually kept mine to at most a 3"x 3", but I prefer 2" x2" sections. When I wasn't twisting or I was doing another section I would braid the other sections as seen above. I found that easier than using clips or pins to clip off sections and prevent loose strands. I t also kept my hair stretched out so the twists wouldn't start off shrunken. Im my experience the shrinking starts about 3-4 days in and the best way to stretch them back out is to band. They'll never go back to being as straight as when I started, but they will lengthen out a little.

It seems like there's a lot going on in the pics, but really I only deal with one of the components at a time. I prefer to use as many clips as I did to optimize visibility in the back, but I've seen curly vids where they only use 2-3 clips for the whole process. I use at least 6 at all times.

These were taken today (technically yesterday) about 2 weeks in, and I plan to keep them in for 4-5 more weeks. I wore the twists pinned up (seen above) to an interview earlier today actually. I hope I get the job :D.

Btw, my touch up method for my ends (they get frizzy and dry every 3-4 days) is to just put a dab of Elasta QP Olive Oil & Mango Butter to each end. I do this at night before I go to sleep. It takes about an 1-1.5 hours so I only do once a week. I hate the smell of the stuff, and it's kinda gooky at first, but after I wake up my ends are wonderful (I hope you can see in the pics)

They are considerably smaller and took much longer as well. Over the course of 6 days and 18 hours from June 1 - 6 I did them. So far they are holding out well, safe about 10-15 loose strands of hair that got pulled out of the twists. The loose strands annoy me and I'm too lazy to fix them soo...

This post contains A LOT of pictures. I've had a busy hair week.

I took out my twists after 3 weeks because I was getting restless and bored of them. It was also the first time I did them and I think I can do it better the second time around. I'm banding my hair again, just with more sections (12) and less space between the bands. After the bands are out I'm going to blow dry on warm then cool to straighten my hair out more. I like more length with the twists.

This was the last day of the twists right before I took them out.

The last time I banded I put 5 on each section, but this time each section has 7-8. I have seen a few tutorials where they don't put anything in their hair but EVCO or shea butter for twisting, but I put in most of my moisturizing products that I usually do, just no oils or butters. I'll do that when I twist.

This was my braid-n-curl after the twists, I wasn't too pleased with it, and I went swimming... so ooo the twists are coming back.

Twists

I am in week 2 of wearing my twists I did from May 5 - 7. I don't have any pictures from when I first finished or the first week, so excuse the frizziness.

I dont know why I've never done these before. They are the simplest hairstyle to date. I did

twists that weren't too small and it took about 7-8 hours total, but all I do for upkeep is re-twist the most frizzy ones, spray my concoction, and apply Elasta QP Olive oil and Mango Butter to my ends and EVCO to my roots.

To do the style I first co-washed my hair with HEHH+HETT, Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine, and Aussie Moist and rinsed all the conditioner out. I let my hair get damp and put Cantu Shea Butter L-iC, and banded my hair in about 10-11 sections. I slept with my hair banded and about 7-8 hours later it was dry. I started the twists in the sections i created when banding which made it alot easier. I used only EVCO when twisting and put a drop on my finger per twist and started applying at the end and then the root and it got dispersed through the rest of the hair after the twist was done.

Since the twists took 2-3 days I started at the front (a part from ear to ear) and finished that then moved from the nape of my neck up. In between when I had to go out I just had the excess hair in medium sized braids under a hat.

At night for upkeep as I mentioned earlier I apply Elasta QP Olive oil and Mango Butter to my ends (I love the stuff keeps my hair shiny and my ends curled) and spray (the recipe is here) and put on a silk scarf. Because of the length of my hair the end sticks out the back I also sleep on a satin pillow case. I don't cover my ends with a bonnet like I've seen other naturals do because my curls always flatten if I do that.

I now have a head full of shoulder length 2 strand twists that took about 3-4 days to do. I'm almost at week 2 and at the rate I'm going they'll last for another 3-4. I'll post pics and maybe a how-to vid of my method.

I Big Chopped!!!

I cut about 4 inches from the back and 7ish from the front. I like it, but it's shorter than I've ever had my hair. I was so afraid of this day but I love it.

I put in twists cause i didn't know what else to do. I'm so used to having long hair to curl and twist and braid and straighten.

So far no feelings of regret...

I have left this blog for quite a while (over a year I think) but now I am back! I almost basically have everything together with school and work and everything. I have many hair updates that will appear in the coming days and weeks, because I have been buying products and trying new styles, taking pictures, trying new products, etc., but I just haven't been posting about it. Not even on the Curly Nikki forum (I'm under Pwatem).

So my update so far is that I am 64 weeks into my long-term transition. I haven't trimmed my hair or done any major cuts (as you can see in the previous post) since then. I'm really focusing on retaining length at this point. Once in a while I can't think of anything to do with my hair and I want to grab some shears and BC so badly, but I think about my super bun (pictures will appear soon), and I hold out.

I have replaced Fantasia IC gel with Smooth n' Shine and it is amazing. I have read a lot of hype about Fantasia and I used it for a long time, but it just doesn't do what I want it to. I have no beauty supply store near me, so I have to rely on what Target or Walmart for most of my products. When I go home next weekend I'm going to live in the beauty supply store.

I also recently made a lot of purchases of organic and natural up-keep and cleansing products.

for a total of about $40 I got:

I just have to get a measuring container thingee (wow my descriptive English is terrible) for the soap nut liquid, and a spray bottle for my other mixture.

Whoa. I haven't posted since the end of November. I have been busy with school and more difficult classes, the CurlyNikki forum, Tumblr, and other forums and blogs. The last couple posts I did were just copy paste from the CN forum.

I think I need to post more which will help/force me to pay more attention to me hair. I will probably update this with my hair progress within the next week.

Sour Cream results

I left the sour cream on for 1 1/2 hours, and rinsed with conditioner 2 times. I don't really like the result. My hair was very thick and soft afterwards, but it lost a lot of it's color and shine. I'm glad I have henna waiting for me at home. It also made my hair easy to detangle, though. I think I'm going to stay away from sour cream treatments for a while unless I really feel the need.

I just bought henna for Tuesday/Wednesday but I accidentally has it sent to my parent's house. AGGGGGHHH So I'll have to henna at home with like 10 people there. . . I wanted to do it right before I went home so I can let my PJ run wild at my beauty supply store in MD. And my mom wanted to see what the results look like. I haven't straightened my hair in a while so I'm going to either late tonight or Tuesday, cause I want to see how much my hair has grown since I cut it.

I am doing a EVCO, EVOO, Sour Cream treatment. I applied the sour cream like I would a relaxer. I was going to henna, but like I said I accidentally sent it to my 'rent's house so I wanted to try something different, since I'm gonna henna anyways in case it doesn't work. The only qualms I have with sour cream so far is the smell, and I applied it straight from the fridge so it was cold and my apartment is already 67 degree (waiting for Christmas to get a space heater). I'm going to keep it on for 1-2 hours and I'm going to straighten my hair after I wash it out. I would do a BnC, but I don't feel like waiting for it to dry and I want to have a hairstyle that I can guarantee will last for a week (I'm going home for Thanksgiving Wednesday to Sunday). My BnC and TnC are very selective when they want to last more than 2-3 days and I have 3 lil bros to wrestle with at home so. . .

sorry for the random side note, but I never liked the series, I just got a little hooked last Thanksgiving with the first one (That's when I got around to seeing it cause I was never really interested). Sooo. . . Taylor Lautenenerrrrr (can't spell worth a thang). I approved all the shirtlessness. I do, I do, I dooooooo.
And I don't feel guilty for being attracted to his fine 17 yr old tail cause I'm only freshly 19.HAAHAAAAHA.

I thought the movie was OK, but there was so much annoyingness (I know for a fact that's not a word) with the writing, acting, and characters, not to say any names *cough*BELLLLLLAAAAAAAA/EDWARDDDDDD/ EVERYONEEEEEE *cough*. It was corny, but cute in a way.
My main beef with the movie was that there was NO EPIC BATTLE SCENE BETWEEN WOLFBOYZZZZ AND VAMPIIYANESS. I mean I would have greatly appreciated at least an epic battle between Jacob and Edward and then in the final seconds Wolfboy's claw goes in the air towards Edward and then it cuts off. That's a cliffhanger that would make me want to see the next one (even though I prolly will any ways )

I should write movies. . . . hmmm* that's a thought.

I wish I would have seen Precious too/instead.

Hair neglect :(

So my hair texture has been revealing itself more and more. It's completely different all over. I wish the texture all over my head was like the type 2 inches above my left ear. It's like a 3c,4a wavy texture and I love it. It's so easy to detangle and comb.

New Hairdo

I am trying another version of a twist-out by doing flat twists against my head, and then braiding the ends, because they won't stay if I do twists.

I also washed my hair with baking soda for the first time. I used 1 cup of warm water and about a 1 1/2 tablespoons of baking soda. Some places I searched said to add enough water to make it into a paste and then apply to the scalp and massage, but I didn't think that would be effective for all the thick hair I have on my head. I then conditioned with Aussie Moist and wanted to keep it on for longer than usual, so I shaved and did my whole face routine in the shower. So far so good. I won't know if there is any build-up until I take my hair out tomorrow or Wednesday morning. I have a project to present in Italian, so I am nervous and I hope my hair turns out well.

Look at all that growth! This Saturday I will be 4 months transitioning.

I am so pumped to henna again! I'm like an addict. But I have to buy it first and I want to henna before I go home for Thanksgiving so my hair can be bangin' for all the fam.

So. . . . I got chocolate !!! (Heath bars!!!!) I have major PMS, so this is amazing. I can't find Nutella anywhere so I needed a fall back. Heath is my choco-bar of choice, Nutella is my spread of choice. Peanut butter? Naw Jam? puh-puh-puhlease Butter? Get outta here! Cream cheese? Not a chance! it's all about NUTELLA!!!

I haven't been posting lately I was at the ER for 15, count 'em, 15 hours. My roomie wasn't feeling well, so I took her down there and stayed for the whole time. We got there at 1:30pm and left at 5:00am. And I missed 2 classes and a test. I have been wearing a hat the last couple days because of all the chaos.

I have just been washing my hair every other day and after detangling with my fingers putting a part down the center of my head and doing really loose twists and curling the ends. Most of the hair isn't dry in the morning, but I just put it in a high bun or a hat anyways. Since I have a lot more growth this month I am mainly focused on keeping it detangled. I have also been focusing on not messing with my scalp that much, because certain parts still hurt from the bantu knots that I did WAY too tightly. At least I know for next time.

With my hair growing like a weed now (loving it) I am starting to see the real texture come out. It is REALLY strange. One part on the top of my head will be really tight like a pen spring, and another part will be loose about 3c and not curly but wavy. I can't wait until my hair really grows out and I can cut off the relaxed ends and see what it looks like.

Bantu knots..... :(

I did my bantu knots WAY too tight, so I took them out only minutes ago, and most aren't dry. The front looks OK so I think I will hat most of it since it's cold out side and my hair is damp. I am glad I tried them because I like the way they look. Next time I will know to

Leave more time for them to dry
Use a heavy butter or locing cream so they will set better
Do more and curl the ends tighter around the knot.
Twist the hair more loosely so my head isn't throbbing in the morning. lol
Do the knots on damp hair, not wet hair.

I'm gonna try again later on today and they will have all/most of Tuesday to dry. Hopefully by then my furlippin hood dryer will get here and make these processes a lot easier.

Bantu Knots!!

I'm a firstie when it comes to bantu knots, so i'm hoping they turn out well so I continue to tweak and improve.

Now here are the pics of my bantu knot process. The front was pretty easy and came out even, but the back kinda fell apart part-wise. As you will see they are pretty uneven. I will try and pre-part and then twist next time. I am SOOO excited to see how these will turn out. I've wanted to see how they look on me for a while.

I an EXTREME procrastinator. I have a paper due tomorrow at 11:59pm. I should get on it.

I didn't realize how tight I had made them until after and my head is starting to hurt. Nothing a motrin or two can't fix. Again I am SOOO excited to see how they turn out. I will put pics of the result up tomorrow or Tuesday depending on when they are as dry as possible.

So I have been "neglecting: my hair and just doing 2 french twist-braids at night on wet hair and bunning because I've been pretty uninspired on the styling front. So in light of Curly Nikki's Butters-N-Bars challenge I will force myself to be less lazy and try some new styles. My topic page on Curly Nikki's forum is here.

I am addicted to Curly Nikki's forum. It makes my PJ go crazy seeing all the product reviews and suggestions. And seeing all the beautiful natural hair makes me wish I had never gotten a perm in the first place. Ugghh. I feel like my hair would be at least waist length, or a HUGE fro. I would love to have either. But I can't keep dwelling on the past so I just have to worry about keeping my hair healthy.

The henna continues to do wonders for my hair. I don't have the frizz, flat, or crunchiness problem, and have discovered a perfect formula for my hair. It includes

EVCO for my roots and scalp
Cantu Shea Butter to seal my ends
Cantu leave-in conditioner for moisture

This produced the best hold, shine, and moisture. My I am on 3rd day hair and it will have to last until Tuesday (I will freshen with water and more EVCO on Sunday night). I have to say that I LOVE my haircut. I got a compliment the other day from a woman at the bus stop. It was the first compliment I have gotten when wearing a style that works well with my transitioning hair. It so low maintenance and I am a lazy person so that works well. All I have done the last couple nights is a pineapple bun, and since the back pieces are short I pin them up. Pictures!

My roommate was a vampire (hence the blood). I love the blood tears we put on her face like in True Blood (I am an addict). I did a braid out on her hair, but it was frizzy cause it's 80% humidity here, it didn't full dry, and she isn't natural. She has about the same amount of new growth as me and usually wears tree braids.

I have a severe ailment. I can't keep my hands out of my curls they are starting to frizz (good frizz, so I don't mind) from constant fluffing and grabbing. But the curls are just so soft and fluffy and they bounce and smell like cocunut, orchids, and lavender.

I find myself wanting my hair to be curly right now. I straightened it Monday night after I cut it while it was curly, to clean the cuts up and make it more even (I still find myself looking in the mirror and trimming and more importantly not having a problem with it. One step closer to BCing!!!). And it was 88% humidity in R,VA this morning so I looked like a frizz bucket after a 15 minute walk to class. I keep thinking if I had done a braid-n-curl, or a rollerset the frizz would be positive as opposed to negative.

So I think I will be doing a braid-n-curl for the Halloween festivities. I will be a French Maid again this year. I just wish I had a feather duster and a lace headband and belt to add to it. As of now I only have the dress, stockings, wristlets (I have a feeling that's not a word, but you get what I'm saying right?), and shoes. I want to try some sort of up-do because I know I will be sweatin' on the dance floor. haha.

Yes I cut my hair. Not exactly a BC, but I took off 4 1/2 inches. 5 in some places (yikes) but I wanted the hair to fall nice curly not just straight and my ends are a mess. Even henna and DTs couldn't fix them. I have NEVER cut my hair before so this is a big step towards my BC. So here is my reactionary video *yikes* lol.

Henna Wash-out Method and Results

Three words can sum up my henna experience: I. Love. Henna. My new growth is showing more of the effects of henna, but my relaxed ends are so thick, smooth and healthy. Rinsing it out was , for lack of a better word, a messy experience.

This is the morning after the henna application. I had the henna in from 6pm to 11am.

My method to wash it out took quite a long time, but was very effective.

First, I soaked my head in the tub because some of the henna around my hairline and the nape of my neck had dried. I found that too messy (the water turned completely greenish-brown in 30 seconds) so I stood up to shower only to discover that shower made my hair splatter henna the all over the walls and tub. I advise that, while kneeling, you run your head under the tub faucet until the water leaving your hair is only slightly greenish brown. If you have a detachable shower head you should still stay low or the henna will spray everywhere.

Second, I let the water rinse through my hair for about 5 minutes and then apply two full handfuls of conditioner. I used Aussie Moist and HE Hello Hydration. After the conditioner was applied from root to tip I parted my hair into two sections and ran my hair under the water for a moment than massaged my scalp until the conditioner foamed (it foams light brown, when it's supposed to be white). I made the mistake of not scratching through my scalp (lightly, mind you) the first time so I had to go back and shampoo after I had DCed and co-washed 3-4 times because when I parted my hair after towel drying the henna was still on my scalp.

Third, I DCed with Lustraslik Olive Oil Hair Mayonnaise, and Lustrasilk Cholesterol deep conditioning cream. I saturated my hair with the product and then let it sit on my hair for 2 1/2 hours. I would have let it sit longer, but I was getting impatient and my hair takes FOREVER and a day to dry. When I rinsed out the DC I had to shampoo again, like I said before, so I put HE Hello Hydration on again for about 10 mins in the shower and rinsed with cold water.

At that point my hair was henna free and moisturized. I do agree with others who say henna dries your hair out, cause it did mine.

Finally, I french twist-braided my hair (see the video in the post below) and I can already see the difference in my hair and it's 80% dry. It's so shiny! I will definitely henna again next month.

Let me clarify, cause that verb is insane looking: I just applied henna about 2 hours ago so my head feels really heavy and floppy. My skin is pretty light, so I hope it doesn't stain.

I have pictures:

I used the Curly Nikki's method, only I added lemon juice.

Supplies needed:

HENNA!
I bought my 2008 summer crop Jamila henna for $6 ($5 shipping) from mehandi.com. It shipped in 1-2 days.
Green tea.
I used Twinings Green Tea, because it was cheap and I don't mind using on my hair because it tastes bitter. (Fact: Rooibos tea is my favorite to drink)
a container with a lid.
Make sure is is big enough for you to stir without making a mess. When mixing the henna it can make a mess if you're not careful.
a disposable spoon.
I used a plastic spoon which made it difficult to stir, so I would advise using a cheap metal spoon.
a measuring cup.
you will need around 2 cups of water for 100g depending on the consistency you want it.

mehandi.com sells gloves, but I bought some latex gloves from Krogers for about $1. I was afraid that the gloves would snag my hair at first, but they worked well and can be used again.
plastic shower cap.
I bought a pack of 15 for a dollar from Walmart.
newspaper or a plastic bag.
this is for covering your counter or floor. I used both; Newspaper for the floor and plastic for my counter/table. I took a plastic bag and cut out the shape of the counter or sink I was using before I applied it.

Steps I took:

I heated up 2 cups of water in a pot until there were bubbles covering the bottom and starting to run up the sides.
I put the heated water into the measuring cup and added 3 bags of Twinings Green Tea.
I let the tea steep for 5-6 minutes while stirring and blowing on it to cool it down. I then took the tea bags out and put the tea in the fridge for about 5 minutes to cool it more quickly.
I put the henna powder into the container and poured the tea in and began to stir. I started by pouring half a cup of tea and mixing that as well as possible. Then I poured about a tablespoon of tea at a time and would mix until the mix resembled mashed potatoes.
I kept stirring until there were no dry spots and less lumps. I covered the henna and went to wash my hair.
I put down the newspaper and plastic and then hopped into the shower.
My intentions were to co-wash, but I felt like there was too much residue on my hair so I used my South of France Shea Butter soap bar ( again, i love that thing tremendously). What I did was strange. I ended up half co-washing with HE Hello Hydration then rinsing out the conditioner and shampooing, and then applying HE Totally Twister and Aussie Moist conditioner for 4 mins at a time twice. It made detangling very easy.
After getting out of the shower I took a towel and squeezed the dripping ends with a towel.
I split my hair into 2 sections by parting from ear to ear and clipped the top half of the hair.
I added 6-8 teaspoons of honey and 2 teaspoons of lemon juice (rough measurements, remember?) to my henna mixture and stirred until it was the consistency of yogurt. Note: my mixture had clumps in it, but for the most part was like thick yogurt. That was after mixing for 5 minutes (doesn't sound like a long time, but when mixing vigorously it feels like an eternity to your arm!).
I donned my latex gloves and an old wifebeater. I suggest wearing old and non-cherished clothes because if you can't tell by the below picture, it can get messy if you aren't careful.
I split the mixture in half (with the spoon just drew a line down the middle) and started glopping it on the back section. I started in the center and worked outwards, then I glopped it on my ends upwards. I also made sure to get my edges (that part ended up really messy and all over my face, neck and back. After the back was done I unclipped the top half and flopped the hair forward and glopped. then I pushed the hair back and glopped and smoothed. after the hair closest to my head was covered I used the rest of the henna to make sure the my ends and the body of my hair were covered. (I love my verb usage in the step (glop, plop, flop lol)
I twisted the extended end of my hair not slicked down by henna in a circular motion and smooshed it to the top of my head and covered my hair with a shower cap.
I used a damp washcloth to wipe the henna off of my face, arms, neck, and back (I'm a mess lol) And that's it for now.

I will do the steps to my rinse tomorrow. I have a funeral of a classmate (R.I.P. Bernard) to go to tomorrow at 11a, so I don't know how I will fit in rinsing and deep conditioning. I think I may just put a beanie over my shower cap and call it a day.

On another note, I went to the grocery store to get my meds and some other stuff today and found this gem:

This. stuff. is. AMAZING!!! , although quite the money suck ($10 for 16 oz.). It's called EfaGold Coconut Oil. The ingredients are. . . not are, the ingredient is organic extra virgin coconut oil. It is lovely. You put a little flake on your skin and within seconds it melts into a light oil that smells just like a coconut. JUST like a coconut and isn't too heavy or greasy. I am curious to see how with the incoming cold weather it will look on my hair.

The listed uses are:

Supplement: take 1 tablespoon 1-4 times daily. May be used as a spread (delicious on toast!) or added to salad dressings & smoothies (I will most certainly try this with my usual strawberry-banana or mango-pineapple smoothies. Most likely on the latter. Reminds me of Pina Colada-ness)

For cooking: Use in place of butter, margarine, shortening, or other cooking oils for baking or frying in temperatures up to 350 degrees F.

For skin care: Use as a moisturizing lotion. Place jar in warm water to liquefy, then massage small amounts onto skin.

For hair {:D} care: Use as a conditioner. Place jar in warm water to liquefy, then apply 2 teaspoons to hair 1-2 hours before washing.

I like their recommendations, but I think I will just use it on toast and my hair. ( <--this made me laugh)

While at the store the weather was iffy and when I left it was pouring rain and the wind blew my umbrella to pieces. So I got to the store like this after taking out my french twist braid out

New Layout

My henna arrived!

I am going to be hennaing this weekend for the first time. I'm very excited to see what it does to my hair color. All I need to do is get some plastic/rubber gloves.

I did a twist french braid 2 days in a row. The first day turned out crunchy, flat , and stringy, so I redid it but got the same result so I am going to deep condition soon. Probably when I henna. (is henna a verb? I don't think so, but I'm gonna use it as one) I might add some eggs to my deep conditioner for protein.

I like the Day two twist braids better. I do a flat twist into a braid on each side so that the twists will hold. I think I'll do a video of that after I henna. Here is an old picture of my results (back when my hair was healthier >.<

Buns and Things

I redid my Curly Nikki bun and wore it out after it had dried the next day. I love the way the bun looks, and it is really easy to do.

I have to wait and see if the result will be similar after all my relaxed hair is grown out. I also tried the aforementioned Mane & Chic Southern tease. I had to improvise cause I don't have any chopsticks or knitting needles (lol). I used a clip, and I had to set it higher because my hair lengths are uneven (perm breakage).

Bun Results

I don't have any pictures of the bun itself (I took it down and forgot). But I do have pics of the style dry and worn down. I wore it down the second half of the day when it was warmer outside.

It looks a lot like a rollerset/braid-n-curl but the hair near my scalp is straighter so it falls differently. I like it though. It is quite frizzy in the places I manipulated it the most, so I used Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in conditioner to smooth it down.

Henna

I just bought some henna from mehandi.com. I bought 100g which I hope will be enough. All I need now is gloves and newspaper.

Side note: I am very curious to see the color my hair turns out because I recently (3+ months ago) had it dyed black, but it all washed out for the most part and my hair has heavily tinted red/orange/light brownish from the summer sun.

Bunning

I am going to try some bunning styles since winter is fast approaching and the weather has been insane here in R,VA. The last couple days have had an average temperature of 40-45 degrees (no joke!) so my hair has been in a hat/scarf frequently. So far I have tried the donut or sock method, the Curly Nikki bun, and what I call the tangle bun [I might to a how to, my first one, for this one. it's really easy] and I will try to wear Mane & Chic's southern tease tomorrow possibly if my hair isn't dry tomorrow morning. I also want to try a bantu knot bun.Here are links for some of the bun styles:

Donut/Sock bun 'how to'

My favorite of the ones I have tried is the donut bun. I prefer to use socks instead of store bought donuts, because I can cut them to different sizes.

How to make a sock donut:

Take an sock and cut a hole in the toe. You can also cut more than the toe if the sock is angled or if you want a smaller bun. Also you should use a brown or black sock so that if your hair doesn't completely cover the sock it won't show as much. I use a white sock covered by a black sock.
put your thumbs on the the inside of the sock (either end, whichever your preference) and roll until you reach the end. You may have to fold end under, or roll from the other side.
If you are using a white sock and covering it with a brown or black sock cover the rolled white sock with the black sock and pull the end through the middle. I stretch out the middle a few times during the process to make it easier to get my hair through.

How to do a bantu knot out bun:

While my hair is still wet after washing, conditioning, and detangling I either pull my hair into a high or low ponytail and secure using a hair tie (skip this step if you want)
I then use Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In conditioner, Aussie Moist, Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum, and Aphogee Leave-in Conditioner to smooth and wet my hair a little more.
I put Cantu Shea Butter and Lustrasilk Olive Oil Cholesterol on my ends.
I take my hair from where the ponytail starts and twist my hair around itself until I reach the tip of my ponytail. Then I continue to twist until my hair starts to bend. I keep twisting the hair around itself until I reach the end and tuck it under the Bantu Knot and use a pin to hold it in place. It should resemble a bun, but be kind of misshapen.
I put on my satin scarf and go to sleep. In the morning I undo the twist, fluff, and either tuck the hair under, wear it as a pontytail or put it into a donut bun.

3 Months

It's been three months since my last perm (July 18), I have 2 or so inches of new growth (SO happy about that). It makes me confident that I will BC soon. I want my hair to be around chin length when I do, so I got probably 3-4 months until I will consider either cutting a lot off or BCing.

I am trying Curly Nikki's bun because the twists weren't staying and my scalp was starting to itch. I am shedding a lot less which I LOVE tremendously. I deep conditioned today before I set my hair for the CN bun with the Lustrasilk Cholesterol and Hair Mayonnaise. I loved the result, My hair detangled very easily and was very soft and healthy afterwards. I had to resort to a showercap and hot towels [2] because I don't have a hood dryer.

It's been so cold in my apartment (avg of 67 degrees brrr*) that I have to go to sleep wearing this:

Consisting of a turtleneck, leggings, fluffy socks, and a hat.

I have to try a bantu knot out soon.

Fall Break!!

Random fact: Today is my mom's birthday. YAY!

Where the Wild Things Are comes out tomorrow. I am so excited so see it. I wanted to go see the movie with my mom, since she read the book to me a million times when I was younger, but the train ticket home is $120 so that can't happen.

My twists turned out good, but it was mist-raining today so the curls fell out, and a few of them unraveled due to my relaxed ends.

As I said yesterday, I'm going to try and make these twists last for 1 1/2 - 2 weeks. So far so good. it is pretty cold today, so I wore/am wearing a hat today.

I went to Krogers to pick up some prescriptions, and ended up buying 4 products and 2 other things I need to prepare myself to henna. I got Lemon juice, Green tea, South of France Shea Butter Vegetable Soap Bar (I've been wanting to try this), Lustrasilk Moisture Max Olive Oil Hair Mayonnaise, Lustrasilk Olive Oil Cholesterol, and Lustrasilk Herbal Cholesterol Deep Conditioning Cream. The soap bar smells like soap (haha), and out of the conditioners they all smell pretty bad. The Hair Mayonnaise smells like cough syrup, and the other two smell like normal cheap conditioner. I spent a little under $20 and got almost everything I need, so I am happy with my purchases. Now I have to see if they work. I'll try them in a week or so, if my twists last that long.

Walmart

I went to Walmart to get a few essentials (i.e toilet paper, paper towels, fruit, etc.) and I ended up getting:

disappointed to find that the Hair Dressing Pomade has petrolatum in it)shower caps (preparing to henna with indigo, but I am missing the main component HENNA!) and my fav purchase *drumroll* HAIR SCISSORS.

I have been skeptical about getting hair scissors because I will go through moods when I want to cut all my hair off and others when I REALLY don't. But I got these for my ends and knots. I'll post pics of how my hair turns out tomorrow. Well it is "tomorrow" so later today.

I have Italian homework, and it feels like 10PM when it's actually 1:30AM yikes! I missed The Mo'Nique Show :( Wendy Williams :( and Chelsea Lately. I am a talk show junky. HAHAHA.
